#WhiteWednesdays Founder Fighting Forced Veiling of Women In Iran

Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad started the White Wednesdays movement in 2017 to encourage Iranian women to wear white headscarves on Wednesdays to protest the compulsory hijab (veiling) laws in Iran. After the 1979 revolution, Iranian women have been forced to wear the hijab in public and cover their hair. In 2018, 112 women in Iran were arrested while defending women’s rights, many for peacefully protesting against the compulsory law. Alinejad speaks about Nasrin Soutoudeh, the prominent human rights lawyer who was sentenced to 38 years and 148 lashes for defending women who were jailed for protesting against the compulsory hijab law.
